Matter Labs Trademark Application for 'ZK' Draws Criticism

Matter Labs, the developer behind ZkSync, has filed a trademark application for "ZK" (zero-knowledge) in nine countries. This move has drawn criticism from the crypto community, with many arguing that "ZK" is a public good that should not be privatized. Eli Ben-Sasson, CEO of Starkware, said, "This is outrageous. It's like a baker trying to patent the word 'bread'." Sandeep Nailwal and Brendan Farmer, co-founders of Polygon, as well as Ben-Sasson and the founder of Polkadot, have also called for the trademark application to be withdrawn. They argue that "ZK" is a fundamental technology that should be open to everyone. They also believe that Matter Labs' attempt to privatize it goes against the ethos of crypto, Ethereum, and academia. Matter Labs has not yet commented on the criticism.
