Singapore Police Warn of Cryptocurrency-Locking Variant of Ransomware ‘AKIRA’

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has issued an advisory warning the public of a cryptocurrency ransomware gang known as ‘AKIRA’. The ransomware has raked in $42 million worth of cryptocurrency from victims in North America, Europe and Australia. According to the SPF, AKIRA typically targets companies and infrastructure entities, taking control of computer systems and data, and demanding ransom payments in cryptocurrency. The SPF advises the public to be vigilant and to take the following precautions: Use strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication. Keep software up to date, including operating systems, applications, and security software. Be cautious of clicking on links or opening attachments in unsolicited emails. Back up data regularly and store it offline. Have a plan in place to respond to a ransomware attack. If you are a victim of a ransomware attack, the SPF advises you to: Do not pay the ransom. Report the incident to the police. Contact your insurance company. * Seek professional help from a cybersecurity expert. The SPF is working with international law enforcement agencies to investigate the AKIRA ransomware gang and bring the perpetrators to justice.
