UN Concerned About Telegram Founder's Arrest and Prosecution

The United Nations has expressed human rights concerns over the detention and prosecution of Telegram founder Pavel Durov. "There may be several human rights issues at stake in this case," a UN spokesperson said. "The UN is closely following the situation." Durov was arrested at Le Bourget Airport in France on February 24 and was released after serving the maximum detention period (96 hours) under local law. French authorities have formally charged Durov and placed him under judicial supervision and a ban on leaving the country. "Governments have a responsibility to regulate social media," the UN spokesperson said. "However, they must do so in a manner that is consistent with international human rights standards."
