Tornado Cash Founder's Hearing Raises Controversy: Control Over Service Under Scrutiny

Tornado Cash founder Roman Storm's hearing focused on determining whether he controlled the service and created the software. According to Coindesk, the hearing on August 12th aimed to dismiss the lawsuit against Storm. Storm's attorney argued that he developed privacy software for global financial transactions, not specifically for DPRK money laundering. He also asserted that Storm lost control of the Tornado Cash pool after May 2020, relieving him of responsibility for its misuse. The prosecution, however, maintained that if Tornado Cash were a legitimate business, it should have taken measures to prevent criminal activity once it became aware of it. The judge postponed the trial from September to December 2nd at the defense's request. This hearing highlights the ongoing debate about the control and responsibility of decentralized services in the cryptocurrency industry.
