25th Amendment Resolution Proposed as Biden Withdraws from Presidential Race

Nancy Mace, a Republican member of the House of Representatives, has announced her intention to introduce a resolution invoking the 25th Amendment following President Joe Biden's unexpected withdrawal from the Democratic presidential race just months before the November election. "If the president isn't mentally fit to run for reelection, he's not fit to finish out his term," Mace stated. "If he won't resign, we should invoke the 25th Amendment." The 25th Amendment allows the vice president, with the consent of the Cabinet, to remove a sitting president from office who is incapable of fulfilling their duties, with the vice president assuming power as acting president. Biden, in a statement released this morning (Korean time), declared, "While I intended to seek reelection, I firmly believe it is in the best interests of the Party and the nation to step aside and allow the Party to focus on building a Democratic majority in the House and Senate in 2022." This is the first time in US history that an incumbent president has withdrawn from the reelection process less than three months before the election, especially when they had already secured the majority of delegates and only the party's formal candidate selection remained.
