ERCOT Recommends Classifying Bitcoin Mining as 'Controllable Resource'

ERCOT, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, has recommended that Bitcoin mining be treated as a Controllable Load Resource (CLR). A CLR is a facility or resource that can freely adjust its output under the control of ERCOT. This recommendation was made in a letter submitted to the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation by Pierre Rochard, VP of Business Development at Bitcoin mining company Riot Platforms. The classification of Bitcoin mining as a CLR would allow ERCOT to better manage the state's power grid by being able to control the output of Bitcoin mining operations. This would help to ensure that there is always enough power available to meet the needs of the grid. The recommendation from ERCOT is a significant step forward for the Bitcoin mining industry. It shows that regulators are beginning to recognize the value of Bitcoin mining and its potential to help improve the reliability of the power grid.
