Meta: Surge in Deepfake UK PM Videos Pushing Crypto Scams

Meta Platforms Inc. (META.O) has seen a dramatic increase in the number of deepfake videos featuring UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer promoting cryptocurrency scams. According to data analytics firm Penmore Harper, over 250 such videos have been identified on Meta-owned platforms like Facebook and Instagram. The deepfake videos use artificial intelligence to realistically simulate Starmer's appearance and speech, making it difficult for viewers to distinguish them from genuine footage. Data analytics firm Penmore Harper claims that almost half, 43%, of these deepfake videos are linked to crypto scams. The ads are estimated to have reached up to 890,000 users. The surge in deepfake videos involving Starmer and other prominent figures highlights the growing threat of this technology in spreading misinformation and promoting fraudulent schemes. Meta has taken steps to combat the issue, including developing new detection tools and raising awareness among users, but the problem persists.
