Noise-Induced Hearing Loss: A Preventable Public Health Concern

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a common but preventable public health concern. It occurs when loud noise damages the delicate structures of the inner ear, causing permanent hearing loss. NIHL can result from a single exposure to an extremely loud sound, such as an explosion. However, it more commonly develops gradually over time due to repeated exposure to loud noises, such as those in the workplace or at recreational activities. The symptoms of NIHL include difficulty hearing speech, especially in noisy environments; tinnitus, or a ringing or buzzing sound in the ears; and an inability to distinguish between different sounds. NIHL can have a significant impact on quality of life, interfering with communication, social interactions, and job performance. It is also associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia later in life. Prevention is key to addressing NIHL. Wearing earplugs or ear muffs in noisy environments, reducing the volume of music or other audio, and taking breaks from noise can all help protect hearing.
